26 Colourful Posters

Posters had a special place among Anatoly Gitberg’s works. He did posters on his own and in collaboration with other artists for the All-Union Vneshtorgizdat publishing and printing association, Novosti Press Agency, Moscow Circus, Soyuzgostsirk association, music and drama theatres, operetta, opera and ballet companies.

Here are several posters designed by Gitberg in collaboration with Mikhail Kanevsky on the eve of the 1957 World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow. The Third International Friendship Games were held during the Festival.

26 Colourful Posters

We saw those posters when they were finished by the artists but not yet lithographed. They have a great future. This summer their bright series will adorn the walls of Moscow houses, fences and hoardings.

Billposters published by the All-Union Committee for Physical Culture and Sports are meant to popularize the Third International Friendship Games that are going to take place during the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow and visually present the forthcoming competition programme.

The first, general poster is a sort of guide to the Games. It gives the venues and schedule of individual competitions. Every one of the remaining posters focusses on a certain kind of sports on the Games programme. The artists Mikhail Kanevsky and Anatoly Gitberg have done a good job: their posters are expressive and smartly designed.

These posters are expected to be printed in 5 000 to 7 000 series. Put up on Moscow’s streets and squares, they will add a colourful touch to Moscow’s overall festive decoration during the festival.
